Natasha Denona Star Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches (2020)
Star (2020)
Natasha Denona Star (2020) 18-Pan Eyeshadow Palette ($169.00 for 1.44 oz.) includes a mix of metallics and mattes across a mix of earth tones paired with pops of red and berry. All 18 eyeshadows were pigmented, blendable, and easy to work with and had good longevity (without a primer). There were no misses or duds, unlike the original version I have (which received a B-).
The more sparkly shimmers were smoother, while the mattes were more pigmented and less powdery/dry; the metallics were not as emollient but still very pigmented, blendable, and flattering on skin but had improved longevity. The performance of the formulas in the current version are more in line with more recent releases from the brand.
The formulas went through some refinements in the last two years (I’m not certain the exact cut-off, and the one I’m reviewing was purchased in June 2020), and one major difference is that some of the shades from the original palette contained plastic (PET) glitter particles, and the current palette does not. I did feel like the majority of the shades were better in the current formula compared to the original as there was less fallout, better pigmentation, better longevity, and they were, overall, easier to work with. The mattes were smoother, more substantial and less powdery, while the shimmers held up better over time on my lids (without primer).
There were nine shades that I felt differed enough to warrant being listed as a second shade; a few of the shades may have appeared similar in color but no longer contained plastic glitter, which I felt was worth differentiating from. There were a few that were noticeably different in color and/or undertone (so dupes could not carry over from the original shade).
I wish the packaging got updated, though! Still loathe that overhead projector sheet with the names…

Spectrum (101K) (2020)
Spectrum (101K) (2020) is a deep, bronzy gold with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It was a lot less sparkly and was warmer (rather than greener) compared to the original version, and the texture was much smoother and less prone to fallout in the updated formula. The eyeshadow had opaque pigmentation that applied well to bare skin as the color went on evenly and blended out easily without losing its intensity. The consistency was moderately dense, lightly creamy, and smooth, which made it easy to work with. There were signs of fading present after nine hours of wear.

Formula Overview
-
The majority of the brand's eyeshadows are quite pigmented, blendable, and long-wearing. The eyeshadows have improved over time, particularly with respect to longevity (without a primer). The original formula often creased on me within seven to eight hours, whereas the more current formula wears eight to nine hours with fading (instead of full-on creasing). The more matte finishes tend to be a bit more velvety, substantial, and less dry/powdery compared to prior iterations.
The metallic finish is often the creamiest, slightly denser in feel, but has excellent pigmentation, adhesion, and blendability. The sparkling shades can have some fallout, depending on how they're applied and how sparkly they are, so they sometimes work better with fingertips or a dampened brush; they can also run sheerer compared to other finishes.
Cream-Powders are the more unique formulation and tend to have firmer, almost stiff, consistencies and more semi-opaque, watercolor-esque coverage. They are longer-wearing, but they can take a few uses to learn how to use. This formula has also improved compared to when it first debuted--it is a bit more yielding now.

Cosmo (109K) (2020)
Cosmo (109K) (2020) is a deep, more antique gold with moderate, warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. It was less sparkly (the current version had finer sparkles, really) and appeared lighter with less depth compared to the original version, but it lasted longer and could be built up/packed on with a second layer for full coverage. The consistency was fairly smooth, soft, and blendable and wasn’t prone to fallout. It had nearly opaque pigmentation that stayed on nicely for eight and a half hours before fading a bit.

Galaxia (112K) (Retro)
Galaxia (112K) (Retro) is a light-medium peach with moderate, warm undertones and flecks of iridescent blue that sparkled as the light hit it. The texture felt lightly emollient and smooth to the touch, dense without being too thick, so it picked up well with a brush and had very little fallout. It had nearly opaque color payoff that applied evenly to bare skin and blended out nicely along the edges. This shade stayed on well for nine hours before fading visibly but had a touch of fallout over time as well.
It was consistent in color with the Retro palette (so both of them are quite the departure from the original in the Star palette) but seemed ever-so-slightly emollient in texture.

Look Using this Product
Atik (117CM) (2020)
PiPPermanent in Palette.
Rhea (118M) (2020)
Rhea (118M) (2020) is a muted, medium copper with moderate, warm undertones (leaned slightly rosier) paired with a metallic finish. The eyeshadow was intensely pigmented with a smooth, creamy consistency that was dense but not thick or heavy, so it picked up well with a brush and applied evenly to bare skin. This shade stayed on nicely for nine hours before fading slightly.

I am always attracted to shades like Orion and have several in my stash. Overall, this is a palette that I wouldn’t have considered buying before, as I never liked her formula very much, but since this appears to be better, it is something I would consider buying. I haven’t purchased a new e/s or palette since before Christmas since I don’t like buying without swatching but I might give this a try. I have a card load of Sydney Grace e/s that I have been dithering back and forth about and may spring for those instead of this. Anyway, as always, a beautiful eye look, Christine. I always love your eyes down photos. They really show the eye look well but also allow us to see what blush and lipstick you paired with the look and give me a sense of an overall look rather than just your close up. I have tried to capture that look and it doesn’t work for me. Likely since I have to hold the phone in one had so I feel like a contortionist and frequently, I don’t end up in the frame at all!!
Sydney Grace likely will have their Christmas in July sale, so you might want to wait ’til then to make any purchases! 🙂
Thank you for the advice. I can’t remember that from previous years but my memory has been all over the place lately with stress and a sense of impending doom, LOL! I lived through the dramatic racial unrest of the 60’s and felt it then but even more so now that I have a biracial daughter. It feels like I am living with constant fear of something happening to her and it doesn’t feel good. Living in Montana is a mixed bag for any racial minority, be it Black, Native American, Asian or Hispanic. There are not a lot of minorities and my daughter does not get involved in high risk behaviors but she is frequently the only minority at an event and while she doesn’t worry, I do. Anyway, lets just say my nerves have been a little on edge lately and thanks again for the tip.
Hope your daughter stays safe! ❤
Perfect workhorse palette for someone like myself who loves to do more out of the box neutral eye looks. May just have to grab this beauty up during ND’s next Black Friday sale. Your eye looks along with all the shade comparisons between the old Star Palette and the new iteration have sold me on it!
I’ve held out on getting this due to the poor review. I may try to grab it during a Black Friday sale. Thanks for re-reviewing this.
I’m so glad it’s better!!
“overhead projector sheet with the names”. Dying ?
Yes! I’ve always wanted this palette because of the color story but the original version didn’t get a good ol’ “A” from you. Now I can finally get this because it’d be worth it!
Christine has the Lila palette undergone a revamp as well? It’s always been a paltte I’ve got my eye one but I’d rather wait for the better formula.
I’m not aware of any update to that one! The ingredient list on Natasha Denona and Sephora websites both list the older formula (notably, you’ll see acacia something rather in it, which has typically been part of early iterations of ND’s formulas, in my experience). Both websites reflect updated ingredient lists for Star.
Oh goodness me, now I know I’m definitely going to get this palette for Christmas. At least I can give my husband a heads up now, haha!
I have the original and do not reach for it due to performance issues. The right hand side of the palette, the shades I prefer, is rather dismal for both the mattes and the shimmers. I can eek out a look, but with so many better performing palettes, including other ND that I love, I don’t go there. Star palette was the purchase which scared me off the brand for quite some time. Strange that it is now a significant part of my core products. I doubt I would buy it again, but if there was an insane deal on her, I might…
Took a better look at the dupes, I can easily pass.
Ditto, except somehow I enjoyed the first. Do even though this did much better, I’d have to find a super sale.
This palette contains all the gold, bronzey, olivey kind of shades that I love. Although I do have dupes for many of the key shades – they are strewn across half a dozen or more palettes.
Needless to say that the red, pink and matte shades don’t appeal, but these are definitely in a minority.
It is going to be hideously expensive here, so I will have to think about it. However, this palette has been remastered beautifully and the excellent ratings are a big plus.
Gorgeous eye looks Christine.
Is Look Fantastic crazy expensive for you to shop from? They are a UK site (in case you’re not familiar), and they have Afterpay!
I got my Star palette from them very recently.
Do you know If there a way to tell a difference between the original or the revamp if ordering online? Thank you for all your wonderful reviews!
I don’t think so, unfortunately! I would imagine it is mostly new stock? Especially if you purchase from Sephora, which likely has a higher turnover.
I’ve hemmed and hawed on getting this palette for AGES but I might just now take the plunge…
As I said before (in the sneak peak you provided) there’s lots I love in this palette (only 2 shades that I’d never use) but it’s just too darned expensive (over $200 in Canada) for someone like me, who already has waaaay too many eyeshadows. But if I were a minimalist and was just starting out with eyeshadows, I’d likely buy this palette (it’s not like I’ve not spent well over ten times the $200 on eyeshadows already but then, I’m not a minimalist but rather a greedy little eye-shadow-loving old dame).
Christine, do you think there is any leftover stock on this palette in Sephora, or are all of them them the 2020 version? I’m seriously considering purchasing this, & I don’t want to get the older palette.
According to the brand, it was tweaked 1.5-2 years ago! I purchased mine from Sephora (online).
I have the original Star palette, and it’s one of my favorite palettes in my collection. That said, I’m so glad they made improvements on the shades that were lacking in the original!
I am so happy that you reviewed and enjoyed this one! Was hesitant about the other one because it did not get a high score from you.
Can I ask how you know when they made the changes? I wish she kept Tropic and Safari and did updates to improve the formulas on those as some people did find them hard to use
Also, is there any way to compare swatches for two full palettes side by side? I know that the individual shades can be compared but wasn’t sure about a whole palette. Thank you so much!
Hi Maya!
They made changes 1.5-2 years ago per the brand!
You can compare two palettes side-by-side, but it will only show the closest shades between the two. https://www.temptalia.com/makeup-dupe-list/
Thanks so much Christine! Hope you are well. I am presently working an overnight shift and this is my comfort reading to stay awake 🙂
After reading your review and seeing the gorgeous looks you created, I pulled out my Star palette. When it initially was released, I held off purchasing because of your review. However, I really loved the color story so I eventually caved and bought it anyway. When I used it today, it still performs really well. I do not have the outside box so I can’t be sure which formulation it is, but I enjoyed it enough to tell myself, at least for now, I do not need to purchase a new one in the hopes of an improved formula. But maybe the next ND or Sephora Rouge sale…
I wouldn’t repurchase unless 1) having plastic glitter in the original is a deal-breaker, and 2) you really do not like the original (but love the story).
Oh I so appreciate that, Christine. Coming from you, I’ll take that advice to heart.
I wish so badly that this was two separate palettes. Only interested in the right side, and holy hell am I not going to pay $169 for it.
Okay, so I pulled out my old Star palette as this inspired me. And yes, I confirm that unless there’s a duper sale, this one is good enough for me. I will say though that the Galaxia in the original is whiter and messier (a lot) compared to the one in Retro.
Yes, the Galaxia in the original is much, much different from the Galaxia in the current Star + in the Retro palette!
Hi – I have the original Star palette (one of my faves) and it is starting to show signs of age. Do you think this one is formulated that much better that I should repurchase?
It really depends on how often you use it, how happy (or unhappy you are with it – I’m not sure what you mean by signs of age!), etc. It’s an expensive palette, so I’d be hard-pressed to really tell anyone they should repurchase it…
Hi Christine, I bought the Star palette in October 2019 from Beautylish, and didn’t realize they had released a new formula! Out of curiosity, I pulled my palette’s box out to compare ingredients, and although mine doesn’t list Polyethylene terephthalate, it also differs a lot from the ingredients sections up above. Natasha’s website also says it’s Talc free, but 7 shades on my box say otherwise. I’m confused! Did you confirm the new ingredient list with the outer box packaging your palette came in?
There is a picture of the ingredients from the box my palette was in above!
