Sydney Grace Autumn's Reign Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches
Autumn's Reign
Sydney Grace Autumn’s Reign Eyeshadow Palette ($52.00 for 0.95 oz.) is a new, permanent palette featuring a mix of mattes and shimmers across neutrals and various jewel-toned hues. Most of the eyeshadows were opaque, though a few were more semi-opaque (often buildable). The matte eyeshadows having a soft, velvety (lightly dusty to lightly powdery) consistency that applied well and blended out without much work. The shimmers had a creamier, denser consistency, but they weren’t too thick or heavy, so I was able to use them with brushes to achieve rich coverage and smooth application. They lasted between eight and eight and a half hours on me across the board.
Also! 25% of proceeds through December ’18 will be donated to victims of the Paradise fire (why I reviewed the palette over the singles first).

Queen of the North
Queen of the North is a pale beige with warmer, yellowish undertones and a matte finish. It had rich pigmentation with a soft, lightly powdery texture that seemed more loosely pressed compared to other shades in the palette. There was a bit of fallout during application if I was not very careful with my placement. It stayed on well for eight hours before it started to fade to my eye.

The matte eyeshadows tend to be pigmented (typically semi-opaque or opaque, often buildable if they aren't opaque) with a soft, more velvety texture that has slight slip but isn't so thick that it gets difficult to use, applies unevenly, or has a lot of fallout. I've found that most of the matte eyeshadows apply and blend out without much effort but a few may take a bit more effort to diffuse along the edges. The matte formula tends to wear between eight and eight and a half hours on me.

The shimmer eyeshadows are more consistent in pigmentation with the majority of shades having opaque color coverage. The more metallic/sparkly the shade is, the creamier and more emollient the eyeshadow felt in the pan, which often yielded really smooth application and good adherence to the lid, though a few worked better with a fingertip or a dampened brush for true-to-pan color or to get a truer finish/sheen.
Most shades, however, worked well with brushes, and I didn't have trouble applying or blending out most of the shimmer shades. The more satin to pearl like finishes tend to feel a little thinner but blend out well. These shades wore between eight and nine hours on me with some of the more foiled-like shades creasing noticeably at the end (and the less foiled-like ones fading).

Wondrous Knight
PiPPermanent in Palette. $6.25.
Majestic Breeze
Majestic Breeze is a deep, blue-leaning teal with a mostly matte finish. There was a smattering of micro-shimmer in it, but it wasn’t noticeable to my eye in person. The texture was soft, velvety, and substantial enough to yield opaque pigmentation and not sheer out too easily. It blended out without too much effort and stayed on well for eight and a half hours

Countess
Countess is a light mauve with cool undertones and a matte finish. It had good color coverage that adhered evenly to bare skin and blended out easily, though it was better with a primer underneath if full coverage was intended as it sheered out a bit on my bare lid. The texture was soft, a little powdery but did not have much fallout during application. The eyeshadow lasted well for eight hours on me before it started to show signs of wear.

Brilliant Realm
Brilliant Realm is a deep burgundy with cool undertones and a mostly matte finish. The pigmentation was good and easily built up to full coverage with less than half of a layer on top. The consistency was soft, lightly powdery in the pan, and blendable on my skin. It wore nicely for eight and a half hours on me before fading noticeably.

Sovereign Rain
Sovereign Rain is a deep purple with warmer undertones and a satiny sheen. The eyeshadow had rich color payoff that adhered evenly to bare skin and blended out easily along the edges. The consistency was lightly creamy, dense and smooth to the touch, but it wasn’t too thick, so it sat well on my lid. It stayed on beautifully for eight and a half hours before creasing faintly.

Formula Overview
$6.25/0.06 oz. - $104.17 Per Ounce

Fallen Splendor
Fallen Splendor is a medium-dark green with warmer undertones and a metallic sheen. It was intensely pigmented with a smooth, creamy consistency that was denser but not too thick or firmly-pressed in the pan, so it picked up well with a brush. The eyeshadow lasted well for eight and a half hours on me before I noticed faint creasing.

What a conundrum! I *LOVE* this palette. Its color story is very me. The quality is stellar. That she is donating a hefty sum of the price towards assisting those who have been displaced and have lost everything in those devastating Paradise fires seriously brings a tear of joy to my eye because this is such an amazing thing for a smaller indie brand to do. Much RESPECT. For all these many reasons, this is something I do want to buy.
Ah! I meant to include that in the review but totally spaced!
This looks like an absolutely gorgeous palette. Everyone I know who’s bought Sydney Grace shadows has loved them. This is going on my wish list.
SG also has a Fall 17 bundle, w/o palette @44, iirc, if these colors don’t float your autumn boat. One of the features they have is swatches of their closest dupes to existing palettes, like subculture. Pretty sure SG’s would be an easier pick! I’ve enjoyed the No Joke bundle and singles scored so far. Their site is pretty easy. The swatches are pretty true, at least on my monitor. The S/H was decent, and they give you an estimated turnaround time. I think this is a good co with good values. Appreciate the lack of drama and hype.
Wow – lots of really stunning shades here and overall a beautiful palette.
My favourite shades were: Magnificent Chestnut, Wondrous Knight, Sovereign Rain, Moonlit Kingdom and Fallen Splendour.
Stunning eye looks and thank you for the review.
Impressive. I’ve never heard of Sydney Grace. This looks great.
Hi Christine,
Thank you for the review as always! I am wondering how 2B+, 5A-, and 8A average out to an A palette… 7A- + 8A could make an A, but the B+ take it down.. no? In other words, is it really comparable to G Decadence??
Everything is based on a percentage, so A+ and A and A- are across a range – you cannot average the letters without actually converting them to percentages. The average raw score is 94.4%. For palettes/kits, each part of the rating gets rounded, e.g. pigmentation averages to 9.4, which gets rounded to 9.5. I do not round up if it means 100%, however, so if something was averaging 9.9 but 3-4 products were 9.5, it would still round to 9.5 to indicate that it wasn’t quite perfect (10/10 would indicate perfection).
Review FAQ > located in the footer of every page: https://www.temptalia.com/review-faq/#glossover
The percentages are based off of the US academic system (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academic_grading_in_the_United_States), though I have chosen to make 98%+ as the cut off (not 97%) for A+, which is disclosed in my review FAQ:
Thanks for the explanation! Looks like it’s a solid A 🙂 I followed the link from here and read about the co donating proceeds to Camp Fire and that tipped me over to buy the palette. Also, YouTubers have rave reviews on these shades. I would have also gotten the 2017 fall bundle, but that looks discontinued. Look forward to comparing with my PMG collection and CR’s QoH. Sometimes the small indie brands have shadows comparable to high-end.
I have been wanting this palette since they teased the shades on their IG! Unfortunately because of the fire the original release date was moved back so I wasn’t able to get it when it came out on Black Friday, but I asked her if it would be available after the holidays and she said it would, which is what I might have to do. I can’t wait to get it though, and I’m glad it got a good Temptalia review!
I love Sydney Grace shadows! I’m so glad to see you review them. They look so multidimensional in your swatches. Makes me wanna run out and grab it.
Because not too many of the big companies were doing greens, for the first time I went for Z palettes and began collecting singles. For me, most palettes have too much brown, copper, and red. Year after year of this has turned me off to palettes. Since this past Spring, I’ve bought a number of Sydney Grace singles (as well as some MUFE, Nabla, and Colourpop) including a numerous greens and colors to wear with greens, pale yellows etc.. Now I have a Z palette filled with all shades of greens and I use it a lot. The SG colors are great and so is the formula. Thank you for reviewing! Have to add Falling Reign to my list!
Oh goodness I really want this. It’s just hard to justify spending on myself during Christmas. I’ve already bought myself many, many other gifts during the numerous Sephora sales. I plan on picking it up eventually but would love to have part of the proceeds go to help the fire victims.
I don’t own any Sydney Grace products but from your previous palette review and this one, I am really impressed. I appreciate their quality. The company values seem in line with what I want to support and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate names that are beautiful and not vulgar, drug related, incorporating profanity, overly sexual, etc. I am going to place an order. Thank you for bringing this indie brand to our attention, Christine.
I am beyond delighted to see you reviewing Sydney Grace shadows! I have about 80 of their singles and this palette, and I can say they are truly the only shadows I reach for regularly these days. I’m excited you’ll have them in your dupes list. I thought the Pat McGrath “xtreme aubergine” in her most recent palette looked beautiful, but obviously was not going to spend $125 to get one color, so I’m glad to see SG’s is a dupe!
Adding this to my wish list!
