When you are taking a trip (for a week or two) how do you decide what makeup to bring? What do you bring?

I try to plan out 3-4 looks at most, and I’ll usually try to coordinate and overlap colors so I can bring less.  I do the same with lip and blush colors, too.  For lips, I try to bring one light and one dark shade, so if I need something in the middle, I can mix.  For blush, I usually pick one warm and one cooler shade.

I like to bring travel palettes, travel size products and a lot of neutral colors. I also like to bring a warm-toned lipstick & blush and cool-toned lipstick & blush. For the most part, I take those gift w/ purchase minis you get from Clinique or Lancome.

I am so bad at packing… I am such a hoarder. I end up bring a ton of makeup with because I never can decide what looks I want. I’m going to Vegas soon so I will need to plan accordingly.

I usually bring concealer, my tinted moisturizer, one blush, a couple lipsticks that coordinate with the blush, and mascara. Other optionals would be a gloss and eyeshadows, if I know I am going to be going somewhere nice. I’ll admit, though, its hard to choose!

lazeny Avatar

I bring palettes w/ me, then a couple of lipsticks depending on the shades of e/s palettes I bought, foundation, mascara, eyeliner, setting powder. I only bring one blush and travel brush set. The rest of my toiletries are travel sized, or samples sachets they give out. Less space and less weight.

I usually bring along my 88 warm palette but i’ve been loving my naked palette, so i’ll take that one along now. I’m not much of a blush/bronzer person but now i’ll def bring along mighty Aphrodite, golden lariat form WW collection. Then I check what clothes i’m taking and if i wanna do some funky makeup i’ll bring along the the UD bos 3 if it has the colors i want and my fave matte higlighter from wet n wild brule. Mascara, a liquid liner, and a pencil liner(naked has the double ended one). Now i have the sigma make me blush kit so travel with full size brushes got alot easier 🙂

Haha I’m such a control freak when it comes to packing for travel. After all my life of overpacking for short trips i’ve finally mastered the art of packing light! I coordinate the make up (always palettes!) i bring with the clothes I’m gonna wear. Travel is a great time to use up all the samples too!

Chester Avatar

I have a cheat sheet that I check off. I make sure to always bring a travel palette of neutral eye shadows and a travel palette of colorful eye shadows. The rest is in the neutral field, except for maybe a red lipstick.

Bell Avatar

I usually bring foundation/concealer/powder and a travel palette with some eyeshadows and at least one blush, a lipstick for going out (red, fuchsia, berry color) and a gloss for daytime. Oh! And some eyeshadow brushes!

Anitacska Avatar

I tend to take cheap products as I’d be too afraid to lose my precious Guerlain, Chantecaille, Dior, etc. stuff. Usually the 88 shimmer palette and some neutrals, or my 17 eyeshadows which are really good quality. 🙂

Rosanna Avatar

Depends on the place.
If it’s a hot and humid destination, the makeup all better be waterproof or water-resistant. I would probably wear the least amount of makeup during these kind of trips. Foundation, WP Mascara, and Liner. Maybe blush and perhaps cream eyeshadow.

If it’s a road trip or to cities like New York or Europe, I’ll be more inclined to bring more eyeshadows; more makeup in general actually.

Lipstick: a nudish pink, a peach & red.
Blush: warm & cool (or just NARS Orgasm)
Eyeshadow: neutral cream eyeshadow plus a couple powder shades (goldish browns, a dark brown & some colour)
AND my most used Brushes of course!

Andrea Avatar

Well apart from staples like foundation, I tend to just bring neutrals eyeshadow (fool proof, versatile), a coral blush like orgasm and a bright lipstick to add some colour to my face.

Carrie Avatar

I try to pack light when I can, plus I don’t want to worry about leaving something behind that I’ll regret later.

So I’ll usually bring only one-two shades of eyeshadow, an eyeliner that I can wear with both, mascara and my foundation. My lip gloss I usually keep in my purse anyway 🙂

Naheeda Avatar

For short trip – I bring travel palette which is in varous nice colour and natural palette with brown lipstick and gloss.

For Long trip – I bring everything (all palettes) coz there are visits, wedding, party etc so i will need different looks for each!
Plus Pink and brown lipgloss and lipsticks. Sometime bring red lipstick/ gloss.

Whippetlady Avatar

I repot my foundation into a MAC travel pot, bring a Bobbi Brown Blush and a Kevyn Acoin cream blush, then two eye shadow palettes, generally a Chanel and a MAC. Eye liners are black and Crash from UD 24/7. Makeup is not a proble- I run into space consideration more for my skin care! SPF for body. SPF for face. Cleansing cream, Makeup remover.. Night creams! My makeup can go in a little travel toiletry bag but my skin care could use an entire suitcase! And lets not even get into the Hair care.. /whimper!!

Hannah Avatar

A do-it-all, creamy concealer, tinted moisturizer, bronzer/blush duo, a loose mineral foundation or setting powder and liquid highlight are what I’d bring for my face. For eyes I’m going to bring my pop beauty lid bronzer palette because it’s really compact along with brown and black eyeliners from clinique and UD. I’ll also being a mini UD primer potion and waterproof and non-waterproof mascara for eyes. For lips, a ton of lip balms and glosses, and a few sample sample lipsticks (as I’m scared of melting). I’d also pack the essentials like skin care and sunscreen. As for brushes, a small kabuki and my 3 must-have eye brushes. This is what I’m bringing to Cuba!

Eashanna Avatar

I bring the essentials like foundation, concealer, etc.. for eyes, I usually just bring the too faced natural eye palette.. for blush I bring a pink and a coral, and for lips, I bring a pink and a nude.

I have the UD Naked Palette and I don’t know why I cant seem to get into it. I think its missing a lid color that’s slightly darker than sin which for me is really crucial.

Marcela Avatar

good thing my 50 MAC eyeshadows are all condensed into 4 pro palettes, and i travel with them all. also take 1 eyeliner (Feline), 1 mascara, 1 neutral blush, and a couple of paint pots/NYX jumbo pencils for colored bases, 1 MLBB lipstick and 1 lipglass, and my 4 MAC eye brushes.

Natalie Avatar

I do exactly the same thing as Christine – I plan and try to overlap looks and take colors I can mix. Usually I just take a really simple day look, since that’s what I normally wear, and especially on vacation I’ll have no motivation to get fancier. I take a smokey night look, and a red lip night look, and I’m good to go!

Lisette Avatar

I usually try to bring travel-sized versions of the main staples that I use, which makes those GWP minis very useful when I’m traveling! I wish they’d make travel-sized versions of everything, or at least have travel kits for those of us who travel a lot and have items that we don’t really like to go without or to substitute.

Sarah Avatar

I try to minimize what I bring, so I like just basics like tinted moisturizer, concealer & mascara as well as multi-use products like pencils I can use as shadow or liner & tints I can use on my lips & cheeks. It simplifies things so much!

Eileen Avatar

Unless I know for certain that special events will be on the agenda, I leave the special effects things at home and focus on more universal products. There are such wonderful, travel friendly palettes now-a-days. For a week, I’ll just take one fairly neutral palette that can be glamed-up a bit for evening. If I’m going to be gone for a couple weeks or longer, I take one cool palette and one warm palette. Bobbi Brown makes some great travel friendly palettes that include eye, cheek, and lip colors.

Quinctia Avatar

I grab a makeup bag, fill it up, and that’s it. If I’m driving, I might take an eyeshadow palette, but I don’t think I’d trust that flying.

I have a harder time deciding what perfume to bring.

Jill Avatar

I don’t bring a whole lot. Mostly neutral eyeshadows, my basic face stuff, one mascara, and a variety if maybe 4 lip glosses to change it up a little. I don’t like going out on the town a whole lot so my vacation looks are usually casual and laid back, so I try to pack light when it comes to makeup.

Ana Krum Avatar

I tend to choose my favorites, mini-sets and palettes, and those items I hit pan on, so I can finish them quickly. I always come up with a bunch of stuff, and then try to keep only the essential.

☆Lola A♏ ★ Avatar

I usually pack palettes since they are usually travel friendly and offer a variety of colors. I bring a black, purple, blue, and green eyeliner, mascara, Milk jumbo pencil for a base, and 3-4 lipsticks/lipglosses. I try to pack too much makeup in case it’s gets lost or damaged.

Kat Avatar

I used to bring a lot, but lately I’ve been just bringing a few things since I’ve realized that I don’t end up using a lot of what I bring. Typically I bring all my everyday stuff, like foundation, powder, concealer mascara, my highlighting stuff and brow stuff. Then I’ll bring 2 eyeliners (one black, one brown), and a few neutral eyeshadows, mostly lighter ones and then one or two dark shades to darken it all up. I typically bring a very natural cream blush, then 2 powder blushes, 1-2 lipsticks and then of course all my brushes. That’s pretty much it, to be honest. It does depend on where I’m going though, this would be for a city vacation, I’d bring way less to a beach holiday or something like that.

Jen Avatar

I usually stick to this when I travel and it’s pretty much all I need.

FACE:
-MAC Face and Body foundation – light enough to go from light coverage and buildable to provide full. Very versatile foundation!
-LAURA MERCIER loose powder – to set everything if I need it set.

EYES
-URBAN DECAY’S NAKED palette – all neutrals but can definitely create some sexy smokey eyes with these colors!
-MUFE Aqua Cream Shadow in Black – great as liner (when using an angled brush), for a long lasting smokey look or waterlining (stays put all day!) I apply this by dipping a black pencil in it and apply it like a pencil liner.
-GIORGIO ARMANI’s EYES TO KILL mascara – best curling and definition mascara out there!

BROWS
-MAC Charcoal Brown e/s
-MAC 224 angled brush

CHEEKS
-MAC Hipness blush
-SMASHBOX Halo Hydrating Bronzer

LIPS
-Aquaphor – keep my lips hydrated
-MAC Ample Pink plushglass – used daily as a hint of pink and glossy lips
-URBAN DECAY Rush lipstick – everyday light pink color
-CHANEL Rouge Allure Laque in Stunt – for a night out/special occassions look

BRUSHES
-MAC 129 (travel version) – powder brush for cheeks, setting foundation, bronzer.
-MAC 239 (regular version) – to apply e/s to lids.
-MAC 224 and 227 (regular version) – blending.
-MAC 226 – brows

I normally bring miniture skincare products for a complete routine – cleanser, toner, moisturiser.etc and then a palette so I can have variety. I’ve a small brush bag designed only for around 8 brushes, so it forces me to be quite frugal in my choices – a very good thing!

Anita Avatar

Usually I’ll pick 1 or 2 all-inclusive palettes such as the Laura Mercier Colour Wardrobe or Chanel travel palettes. I also like to take multitasking products such as Smashbox Brow Tech To Go (brow pencil and brow gel in one), Stila Convertible Colours or Bobbi Brown Pot Rouges, Stila Lip & Cheek Stains & Stila Convertible Eye Colours. Generally I wear low-key makeup looks when travelling so will make sure I have what I need for a neutral look plus a few extra products I can layer to add more colour or drama.

Lynniekae Avatar

I usually pack a palette or two for eyes (depending on how long I’m gone) with a couple of liners…typically black and plum or navy. My Mally palettes are my go-to for travel. I usually only pack one or two glosses. Plus powder, mascara. Oh, and I carry a MAC Paint Pot with me everywhere I go. If I get lazy or am pressed for time, all I need is to swipe those on my lids.

Scarlett Avatar

I always pack way, way too much makeup because I like to feel like I am prepared for anything. I always end up feeling gross without the right products. I typically bring: two types of foundation-regular and long wear; concealer and corrector, powder-then…pink blush, nude blush, cool eyeshadow palette, warm eyeshadow palette, and whatever palette I am obsessed with at the moment, highlighter, two mascaras-daytime and one more dramatic for night. Assorted brushes. I typically have a million lipsticks/glosses in my purse anyway, so I don’t “pack” those. Then, I pack all of the needed skincare.

Megan Avatar

I just bring two MAC quads. It usually contain a highlite, Sable, Satin Taupe, Handwitten, maybe a gold and a purple. Two blushes, mostly likly something that will go with all e/s. Two glosses and my tinted moisturizer!

Lizzi Avatar

I’ll bring my basics: MAC foundation, concealer, and powder products. UD brow box (my brows are so thin), Too Faced Primed & Poreless, and the UD eyeshadow primer. I always travel with the Tarte Femme Fatale palette for eyeshadows because I can dress up or down with it, 1 or two MAC lipsticks and the UD Pocket Rocket in Eric. I’m weird about traveling, I have to come back with less than I came with. If I have a lipstick that has about week’s worth left in it, I bring that one, no matter the color, just to use it up. Same thing with it comes to the toiletries I bring. I don’t want to bring them back.

WithIt Avatar

Thanks everyone for the great tips! I can’t wait to implement some of your ideas.
I tend to over-pack with makeup (and clothing). I bring too many things because I can’t decide and I think “oh I MIGHT need this.” It’s exhausting! 🙂

Steph Avatar

It depends on what I’m doing during the trip and whether there are going to be any “special events” or if it’s just a laid-back visit with friends and family. It’s nice to have a couple of options, but I don’t like traveling heavy makeup-wise… 4-6 coordinated shadows and a couple of lipsticks can be pretty versatile and much easier to travel with than a huge makeup bag stuffed to the brim with colours I’d only use once, if at all. I don’t bother with different foundations (I usually bring my studio stick since it’s easier to travel with than liquid foundation), powders, blushes, mascaras, etc… one of each is plenty for me. If I’m visiting my folks in the US I don’t really bother bringing much makeup- it’s so much cheaper there than in Australia and I know I’m going to buy a bunch of stuff anyway! XD

Becca Avatar

I usually bring an eyeshadow palette, a blush, bronzer, foundation, highlighter, lipgloss, lip balm, MASCARA, powder, concealer, primer and my 182 and 195 face brushes and 239& and angled brow brush… oh and gel liner haha basically 1 of everything cuz I’m always like “oh wait, what if I’ll need this…?”

Dianna* Avatar

I like to bring one eyeshadow quad + primer, gel liner, mascara, tinted moisturizer, concealer, pencil liner, a few lipsticks/glosses and 2 blushes (one warm, one cool). I also make sure to pack no more than 5 or 6 brushes (one for blush, one for concealer, 3 eye brushes and maaybe a brow brush).

Ariel Avatar

I always bring a foundation, one blush, bronzer in summer, mascara, lipstick, lip balm, and an eye quad. The individual colors depend on the season and what outfits I bring with me.

Ericka Avatar

It really depends on where I am going and if I am taking a family trip with the kids. I usually bring my MAC lipmix palette with a few squirts of lipmix and clear lipglass, the small MAC sample jars for pigments, blush/ bronzer, anything that wont melt off, and travel skincare products.

FlutistEmeritus Avatar

Well since I’m one of those women who does like to match makeup to outfits 90% of the time, I usually do carefully think and plan before I take my trip. I wish there was a premade palette that I could take. But I have to take a 15 MAC palette and fill it based on my outfits b/c that way I know I’ll be safe as opposed to a taking quad. Diorshow mascara, mineralize products, Fix plus (if not flying),black liner,Studio Fix fluid foundation, travel brushes and lipglasses/dazzleglasses.

Val Avatar

I bring my tinted (green) makeup base, eyeshadow base, 1-2 makeup palette, a blush that I am in love with at the time, 1 black and 1 purple eyeliner, 1 lighter shade and 1 darker shade lipsticks, and a concealer for my undereye area

Niki Avatar

I bring my Yaby 40-well e/s palette that I custom-made, 3 blushes, a Smashbox Soft Light Quad for highlighter, a few lipsticks, concealer, most of prep & prime products and small travel size jars of mineral makeup. All of these products fit in the space of medium size MU bag with my my small brush roll of MU brushes.

Mariella Avatar

The Naked Palette has made packing for a trip very easy. I’m quite happy doing neutrals for a week or 2. I generally bring 2 lipsticks (I tend to wear the same sorts of shades), 2 blushes (or the MAC Holiday palette that has 2 blushes and a beauty powder), pressed mineral powder foundation and brush and 1 or 2 eye pencils. I find shadow palettes make life easy – before the Naked palette, I’d take one or two MAC 4-pan palettes that I’d customize or I’d take Too Faced’s Natural Eye kit..stuff like this just makes life easier. For skincare, I save the mini and trial sizes of the products I use most or decant my faves into trial size bottles.
