Do you have any beauty-related resolutions for 2024?

Try to wear full makeup once a week (for fun) 🙂 I’d say less of a full-on resolution as more of something I’ve been noodling on. I wore full makeup for the Party pups’ adoption day!!

Just to be less cavalier about sunscreen. I’m a real believer in sunscreen every day but there are days when it’s overcast and I figure I’m only walking from my car to the gym or my car to the school building so I can skip it in the interest of saving time and “steps” but I really shouldn’t.

I always begin the year looking to reset my collection a bit; really catalog what I use and enjoy and make a commitment to buy less, because I truly have so much… and then the FOMO hits, lol. I have some financial goals I want to make in the first few months of the year, so I know buying less will help with that and keep me committed.

I just want to enjoy my collection this year. Last year was the year of the boxes because of so much moving at work and at home. It started in February and we just finished in November! I knew where my collection was in the stash of boxes and I had a functional basket I worked out of but it was repetitive and I didn’t get to switch things out as much as I liked. Found out, I really liked Mally and Laura Mercier eyeshadow sticks, though! I have almost everything displayed now for easy access so the weekly rotation can start back up again! 🙌💪

I am planning on cutting back on my makeup purchases as I pretty much burned the bank up this year! I needed so much to just get back into makeup and purchased a lot both from online sellers, secondary markets and in person at Sephora, Nordstrom’s and Ulta. I think I am pretty much set for the time being. Like a lot of makeup afficionados I undoubtedly will see things I think I can’t live without and will purchase more but just want to be more conscious of what I am buying and why.
As for skincare, I do want to try a few more things this year. As I have mentioned on the blog lately, at 70, which I will be on Monday, I don’t feel like I have a lot of time left to spend months and months on trying a new product. I also know that having a significant impact on my problems is likely a boat that I missed back in my 30’s and older. I always used good skincare but they didn’t know as much as they do now and likely, when many readers get to be my age, they will feel the same about the current products available. Anyway, I have been following a couple of dermatologists channels on YT and want to try a few of their recommendations. I would rather take advice from actual professionals and not just a “beauty guru”. I recognize that some doctors likely have a monetary incentive to recommend some product and will have to be careful of that. I am currently trying to decide if I want to try the Qure product. I have never done microneedling and not sure I will do it very often but this approach seems the safest to me with disposable needle heads. It is expensive for what you get but that is the case of all skincare.

It took me a minute to realize that I own a truly obscene amount of makeup for someone who is not a MUA or beauty blogger/vlogger, so the one thing I feel like I need to do differently is to buy only what I need. As in: skincare, keeping my foundation/primers/setting sprays and powders stocked up as needed, haircare including my hair dye, body care, and try my absolute hardest not to fall into that very slippery slope of color cosmetics FOMO.
Also, I just recently decided to buy my first oud based fragrance ever just this past month, Kayali Oud Tobacco. And this smells so good on me and works really well with my body chemistry that I may be saving up for the large size bottle!

Omg Oud & niche fragrances can quickly become a fabulous but expensive habit! Love them! Oud Satin Mood – MFK . TF makes wonderful Ouds –

Wear lipstick, specifically red lipstick, more often! I have a million lipsticks, and I love the way I look in red lipstick, but it feels intimidating to wear sometimes, plus they’re more high maintenance.

I don’t really make New Years’ resolutions, personally, but I understand wanting to take stock of certain things and a new year is a good demarcation! I feel more like I live day by day, though, and each new day is a fresh start. If there’s something bothering me or something I feel needs a change, I’ll make a mental (or digital!) note and plan for tomorrow. As far as beauty, I seem to be in a good place at the moment. My skincare and sunscreen is working as I’d like and my makeup’s getting regular rotation. As far as purchases, I’ll play it by ear, but I’m getting to the point where I have a decent collection so something new better be really special and worth it! Anyway, much love to you all in the new year! <3

I don’t make any beauty resolutions simply because I am quite frugal when it comes to buying new makeup. For most of the year I rarely purchase any, except replacements, but by the time my birthday and Christmas come around I find something I really love for my gifts.
After conducting my blush and foundation hunt over the past couple of months, I have finally settled on the ones that work for me – IT Cosmetics CC Cream in Porcelain, DB Skin Renew in Fair Porcelain and Shiseido’s Syncro Skin foundation in Rose 2.
Because of where I live (Melbourne Aus) I am quite religious about using sunscreen, even on cloudy days as I know you can get sunburnt even then.
My skincare purchases have, over the past year, been confined to the brands (The Ordinary, Nutragena, Boots No. 7 etc) that I know work well on my skin.

I really slowed down buying make up last year but I made up for it in niche fragrance! I am no longer sephora rouge – oh well cest vie! I bought a good amount off the PMG website sales better anyway, took advantage on the ulta 21 days of beauty , skin, hair. I use so much mascara – seems I can’t buy enough – this year will be about skin care facials getting my hair done more often at the salon – pampering – im tired 🙂

If I may ask, what are your favorite mascara’s? I am still hoping to find one that works for me. I used a Cover Girl mascara for over 40 years, managing to find the formula even though they would periodically discontinue it and then bring the formula back under a new name. It worked beautifully for me and I usually layered it over other mascara’s if I wanted to try something else as long as I added the CG on top I wouldn’t have an issue. After coming back to makeup, the name is the same, Cover Girl Lash Sensation, but the formula is different. I have tried quite a few in sample sizes but nothing was really working. I bought the MAC Matte Stack and it is better than some that I have recently tried but I am still getting flakes and raccoon eyes at about the mid-day range. Any suggestions for what works for you? Thank you.

I didn’t think I would make the Rouge level this year but somehow I did. I really cut back on my spending so I don’t know how that happened. I am only replacing what I use, and discovering all the beautiful things in my very large stash.

Deborah S. Avatar

You sound like me, Brenda. I was sure I was not Rouge and when I went to purchase my daughters perfumes for Christmas, I was surprised to find I was already Rouge. I bought them during the sale so I got the 20% off which is a big help when you are buying 4 or 5 perfumes. I am hoping not to be next year!!

Like a lot of commenters here:
– being more diligent with sunscreen, as even one day out gives me unwanted melasma
– enjoying my skincare esp as I’m getting older my skin really rewards me when I pamper it!
-appreciating my makeup collection, as I did a huge declutter after Covid, and what remains I really love. Also I purchased some rare and amazing items just as they were being discontinued, and they are gorgeous, so I need to really use them. If I keep buying, it’s not really appreciating what I have, and newer items are unlikely to be of the same quality.
– wearing more lipstick. I realised how it makes my complexion more vibrant, esp red, magenta, cool bright berries. And went nuts after three years of mask wearing with the lip collection.
– low/ no buy or more conscious purchasing of anything, not only makeup. After my huge home declutter, I thought of the environmental consequences of unnecessary consumerism. So I will still buy things that I love and think beautiful, but try to really enjoy using/wearing them till they have truly reached the end of their life, rather than adding to environmental waste.

To only buy products truly unique to my collection and that I know I’ll use. I need to stop buying products in the same shade but from different brands and in different formulas bc in the end, it all looks the same on the skin. I don’t need 15 bubblegum pink blushes or 10 cool toned brown eyeshadow palettes!
